Supervisor Corner – January 2020

Michael D.

Operations Supervisor, Lotus

What’s your name? Do you have any cool nicknames?

Michael D. My nickname has been Duran since high school. It all started when Mike Cuddy, a friend who was with Knighted and referred me, gave me the name to resolve any confusion among our friend group.

How long have you been in the industry and what is your favorite part of the job?

It’ll be four years at the end of February. I most enjoy the people I work with, learning about their lives and what’s most enjoyable for them. It great to watch them grow!

What’s your leadership style?

It’s pretty straight forward. I request that people communicate with me no matter what. I can’t promise that I’ll make things perfect for you, but I will definitely try. I like to help make situations a bit smoother for people when it comes to general requests like schedule changes. I also hold people accountable for their work and expect them to meet the standards that we uphold.

What are the things that you look for in your team members?

Desire to grow because it’s a waste of time not to pursue opportunities. You should try to grow no matter where you are. Not making any use of them is a waste. I also, look for people who are willing to help others out. I think that’s why I specifically appreciate the supportive family environment that Knighted has.

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

It’s not just one person. I always try to pick out the best and the worst of others that I work or live with. It’s the best way to grow as an individual and have well-rounded ethics.

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I like to read a lot. I specifically like sci-fi with travel and am looking forward to reading King Killer Chronicle when it comes out. I also like to hike even if it’s alone. I often go to Hidden Falls; and, when I get the chance I go with my girlfriend.

Share with us a fun fact about yourself.

I just started playing the guitar again after 10 years. I’m glad I’m picking it up again because I have a lot of jazz music history in my family.

What is something you are working to improve or better yourself in 2020?

I want to make more social plans to hang out with family and friends. In fact, I’m planning to travel to Grand Canyon and Mexico with my girlfriend and her family. One day I would love to have traveled around the world and tried various types of food since I like to cook.

have any cool nicknames?

Matthew Q.. I did have a nickname in high school. Friends would call me Agent Q because I always had supplies like pens and pencils that they could borrow.

How long have you been in the industry and what is your favorite part of the job?

I started in the industry with Knighted four years ago at Players Casino, and I am still there. My favorite part about the jog is the people you meet in passing because you meet those from all walks of life.

What are the three things that you look for in your team members? Why are they important to you?

I think it’s nice to work with people who all can get along, and the three things I look for contributing to this dynamic are timeliness, honesty, and a good sense of humor.

What’s your leadership style?

I don’t like to micromanage – I’m pretty laid back. So, as long as everyone is doing what they need to do, and work together, we’re all good!

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

My sister. She works really hard and sometimes gives me a hard time to push myself to do better and better. She is definitely a dynamo! She used to work in the US Foreign Services department, working with embassies all around the world. It was cool when she was with them because I would get the opportunity to visit her at the various embassy locations! I had the chance to go to Sydney, Australia; the Vatican in Rome, Italy; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for four months.

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I really like to hike and snowboard. I’ve recently been trying to snowboard once a week at Mountain High in Wrightwood. I also really like video games, specifically adventure RPGs. My favorite game of all time would have to be the Halo series because of the fun memories I shared with five friends growing up. We would get two consols and split screens together and go to each other’s houses to play regularly.

Share with us a fun fact about yourself.

I love to travel. One of the goals that I have for myself is to visit all the continents in the world. Four of the seven are complete! I only have Africa, Asia, and Antarctica left. Not quite sure how I’ll get to Antarctica, but I’ll find a way eventually.

What is something you are working to improve or better yourself in 2020?

I’d like to go out hiking more. Though I’ve had the chance recently, I’d definitely like to be outdoors as much as possible.
